Every year around this time, like most, I reflect on the past year and then prepare for the new one. Unlike previous years, I now have a blog to do said reflections. 2018 was the first year I can remember being excited about. Usually, I get sad on New Year’s Eve because I’ll admit, I’m not the best when it comes to change. I know nothing changes drastically each new year but as time goes on it starts to feel like bigger changes occur. The biggest reason I dread the new year is because that means it’s going to take me ten months to finally write 2019 in the date and not 2018. Anyways, despite my usual pessimistic attitude towards the new year, I was super excited for 2018. I just had a feeling that it was going to be a good, developmental year and it sure was.
Each year I set resolutions. I know there’s a lot of differing opinions on setting resolutions but for me, the type-A person I am, I like having a list to check off or in a lot of cases not check off. Below are the ones I set for 2018 and how I did in accomplishing them.
1. Build a stronger relationship with God
This resolution is one that will always be on my resolution list as I don’t know that it can ever truly be “checked” off. However, I will say that this was a focus of mine in 2018. I didn’t really know where to start so I downloaded an app called Logos Bible. It has daily studies with an overarching theme. What I like about this app is that it gives you verses to read in the “Old Testament” and “New Testament,” showing that the same lessons and teachings from God are throughout the whole Bible. I’ve more recently moved to a devotional book that was recommended to me called Embraced. Spending time with God has brought a lot of comfort and peace in my life. It’s funny because I look back in my prayer book at prayers I wrote in college and to see the way God has answered some of those prayers just proved that I need to trust in Him more. It also shocks me how relevant the verses I study are to my current situations, He always knows.
2. Start a blog
This is one I set for myself in 2017 that I didn’t accomplish but did in 2018! It’s been a slow start and there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement as I’m trying to figure out what I really even want this blog to become. But, I’ve enjoyed learning something new and having an outlet to express myself. I’m looking forward to continuing it in 2019 and hopefully make it even better.
3. Get down to 125 lbs
This is not one I accomplished. I’m sorry, the Chick-Fil-A app coming out was my downfall. However, I’ll give it half a check mark because I did lose some weight and felt the best I have since before college. If anything, I learned how important working out is and definitely am my best self when I do work out. I do need to admit that these last couple of weeks I have not been good about working out…it’s the holiday’s right?
4. Get to work early
This is another one I didn’t accomplish. In fact, not only did I not get into work earlier, I got into work later…whoops! When I lived at home my commute was two hours each way, I didn’t have a choice but to get up early. Since moving closer, while I thought I’d keep this up, not so much the case. My bed is too comfortable…
While I don’t get to check every resolution off, it’s ok, type-A me is ok with it. 2018 was amazing. It was hands-down the most developmental year in my life. I made some amazing memories with my family and friends, including experiencing a new country and culture. I met an amazing guy that treats me in a way I never thought I would get treated and has taught me so much about life, relationships and myself. I stood up for myself more especially when it came to my career and will be starting a new role in 2019. I also personally struggled with a lot of things and have a lot of work to do on myself in 2019. I’m back to being sad that the new year is approaching because 2019 has some big shoes to fill. But, as I learned that Jesus did with everything, I’m going to take it with grace.
